we just hooked up the box and now it is so stupid. the picture is messed up and all like pixely and there is no sound and there is only 1 channel and it doesnt even come in. we have scanned like 50 times with 3 different antennas and it doesnt work, we've moved it around and even put the antenna outside! nothing works and now we have no tv.

Doesn't the government suck?
To answer your question though. It's not just the antenna. It could be where you are too. If you go to antennaweb.org and put in your zip code it'll give you more information on what sort of antenna you need, or if you're just generally screwed and will never again get those channels.
Ain't the government grand??

From the way you have worded this, it's pretty clear all 3 antennas were essentially rabbit ears.
Quite simply, you need an outdoor antenna and one with higher gain than a simple set of rabbit ears.

Put your address in here and this site will tell you how good of a antenna you need. Your rabbit ear antenna is a multidirectional, which is the lowest gain (worst) there is. Had you done this correctly, you should have started out researching what was needed from the start.
>and we do have an outdoor antenna<
What I said still stands. You should have researched the antenna first instead of after the fact... There are antennas with higher gain...
Or you can just keep complaining about it and do nothing. I certainly do not care.

This will be a signal strength problem. With analogue TV as the signal weakens the picture gradually gets snowier until no longer watchable. With digital there is a sudden point at which the signal is too weak to be usable. This is called the "edge of the cliff" effect. Even with a GOOD outdoor aerial (antenna) - which you will DEFINITELY need unless you can see your local transmitter mast - you may not get all digital channels because until the analogue is switched off, some digital channel groups are being transmitted out-of-band and need a wideband aerial to receive them. Also digital is not on full power yet until analogue is switched off. Here is a link to help you if you are in the UK..

Sorry to hear you are having troubles. Large outdoor antennas can receive more stations than small indoor antennas. You may either have to invest in a large roof antenna or subscribe to a cable or satellite service.
